It is situated in the commune of Fargues, in the south-east of the Sauternes appellation.
On its clay-gravel terroir, it overlooks Château du Mouret, separated by the Pontaulic stream.

It is a sweet white wine made from overripe grapes concentrated by Botrytis cinerea.
This fungus draws water from the berries as it develops, concentrating the sugar content, sometimes up to 350 grams per litre.

Only 200–250 grams will be converted into alcohol during fermentation. The remaining sugars give Château Barbier its characteristic smoothness and sweetness.
